Elvin Edward "Hans" Gerber was born Jan. 25, 1920, at Kendalville to Edward and Marie (Benson) Gerber. He attended schools in Cresco. He came to Mason City in the fall of 1948. He worked at the Kuppinger Construction Co. 1950-51, where he learned much about the construction industry. From 1955-1980 he worked for the Andrews Concrete Company. He was the chief sandblaster and painter when the trucks were cleaned up in the winter.

He was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City. He rang the bell for many years and taught Sunday school there.

Elvin married V. Ruth Ferrier Campbell June 20, 1980, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Their honeymoon trip was to Europe. He especially enjoyed Switzerland. One day the snow caused the mountain highway to be so slippery that the bus driver and guide asked the passengers to walk down the mountain. While walking down the mountain, a woman passenger started to slip into a gushing stream and Elvin pulled her to safety. He helped Ruth farm for about 15 years near Rockwell and Clear Lake. Seven years ago they moved to an acreage near Mason City. He enjoyed going to flea markets, gun shows and actions.

Living members of his family include his wife, V. Ruth Gerber, a son, Jan Gerber and his wife, Candace, Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Debra Marie; a sister, Dorothy Schnauss and her husband, Arnold, Cresco; a brother, Elmer Gerber and his wife, Delores, Decorah; three nieces; and several cousins.
