MASON CITY — George S. Gelner, 79, of Mason City, died Sunday (April 5, 2009) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, April 7 at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. There will be no visitation.

George Gelner was born on Oct. 16, 1929, in Crystal Lake. He attended schools in Hayfield, Iowa and Mason City. He was a strong supporter and member of the Democratic Party. In his younger years, George enjoyed roller-skating.

George is survived by his daughter, Wendy and husband, Jeff LaPitz, of Lakeville, Minn.; two grandchildren, Danielle and Adam LaPitz; two sisters, Carol and husband, Harold Cary, of Mason City, Joan Bonner, of Swaledale; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Opal Gelner; brother, Darol LeRoy.
