Obituary - Ruth Ann (Hungerford) Geary
December 15, 1926 - February 23, 2008MASON CITY -- Ruth Anne Geary, 81, of 1004 Third St. N.W., died Saturday (Feb. 23, 2008) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, Mason City, with Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Inurnment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. The family will greet friends from 4 until 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, where a Scriptural wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to Holy Family Catholic Church, Hospice of North Iowa or the Arthritis Foundation.
Ruth was born Ruth Anne Hungerford on Dec. 15, 1926, at Clermont, Iowa, to Laurence and Myra (Shipton) Hungerford. She attended elementary school at Mitchell, Iowa, and graduated from Manly High School in 1944. She enrolled at St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in 1946, graduating in 1949. She served as an R.N. at Mercy Hospital and joined the staff at Surgical Associates, retiring in September 1986.
Ruth married Daniel R. (Dick) Geary on Sept. 16, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They had three children: Daniel Leo, Patricia (Patsy) Ann (deceased March 26, 1974) and Michael Joseph.
Ruth had many interests which included reading, travel, music, cooking and sports. Both sons being graduates of the University of Iowa, she was an enthusiastic Hawkeye fan and attended many football games at Kinnick Stadium. Ruth was an enthusiastic supporter and patron of the arts, supporting local organizations, the University of Iowa Center for the Arts, various symphony orchestras around the state of Iowa and public radio and television. Certainly Ruth was blessed with many friends and she had a profound effect upon all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Dick; sons, Daniel Leo (Arlene) Geary, Michael Joseph Geary; grandchildren, Kelly and Graham Geary, Colo.; sister, Bertha Alice Skuster; step-sister, Barbara Ristau; and sister-in-law, Peggy Hungerford.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Patricia (Patsy) Ann, step-mother Irma Hungerford, sister Dorothy Pleasants, brother Laurence D. Hungerford, and sister-in-law Mary Lou Petersen.
