MASON CITY — Steve Allen Olson, 73, of Mason City, passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at home under the care of Hospice of North Iowa and surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 25, 1942, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the son of Kenneth LeRoy Olson and Shirley Ann (Marsh) Olson.

His father, Kenneth, was one of the many Marines that died at Iwo Jima in WWII. His mother later married Alf Solberg, and Al was Steve’s dad.

Steve graduated from Mason City High School and then enlisted in the Marine Corps. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Safeway Grocery Stores as produce manager in several locations in Iowa. When Safeway closed its Midwest stores, Steve began tending bar full time. He worked at many bars and restaurants, but was best known as the bartender at the Stein Inn and the Poodle. Steve then worked for IMI Cornelius for 20 years.

On April 18, 1983, Steve married Ellen Kelly Montgomery. Together they camped and explored many out of the way places in every state west of the Mississippi, including Alaska.

Steve loved to watch birds, especially his Baltimore Orioles. He was an avid reader and enjoyed jazz music and ’50s rock and roll. He had also probably seen every old Western movie and TV series ever made.

Steve is survived by his wife, Ellen Montgomery, and their children Christine Boyken, Randall Olson, Richard Montgomery, Kelly (Dan) Biery, Justin Olson, Jason (Tina) Olson, Samantha Olson, and grandchildren Angela, Gabriel, Bryar, Jared, Bree, Lukas, Jacquelyn, Julianna, Madison, Parker, Cooper, Sydney, Mackenzie, and five great-grandchildren.

Steve was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Olson, his parents Al and Shirley Solberg, his brothers Larry and Danny and an infant sister.

Steve’s family invites you to join them for a Celebration of Life at the VFW, 1603 S Monroe, Mason City, on Sunday, July 24, from 2 to 5 p.m. Come have a sandwich and share your stories with us about Steve’s colorful life. The North Iowa Detachment of the Marine Corps League will present his memorial flag at 3 p.m.
