The family suggests memorials to the Sharon Kantaris Memorial Fund.

Sharon was born on April 24, 1936 in Mason City, Iowa to Eugene Thornton and Vietta Trebil. Sharon was born tiny with a strong will, her mother was told she may not survive due to her size and was nurtured to good health on the door of an open oven in a shoe box.

Sharon attended Mason City Schools and graduated in 1954. Sharon was employed by Decker Meat Packing Plant, in the office, for many years. She married Chuck Wright in 1965 and later divorced. Sharon was a great bowler; she enjoyed many bowling trips and tournaments.

Sharon later gave her greatest gift when she became Mother and Wife to Gus Kantaris and his four children. She worked as a bookkeeper alongside Gus at the Mason City Laundry, Athenian Supper Club and Gus' Rib House. Sharon was more than one could ask for in a Mother and a Grandmother. She was a steady source of comfort, love and resiliency that each child and grandchild longed for. She taught lessons in how to be a family, how to love, how to keep house, make a bed all while encouraging strength. Her legacy will last for generations.

Sharon cherished her family and her Catholic Faith; she was a member of Holy Family Church. Sharon enjoyed her Yorkshire Terriers, Costa and Costie. Sharon and Gus enjoyed travels to Hawaii, Greece, and wintered in the Gulf Shores, Alabama. They would be known for long visits to their children and grandchildren's houses. Nothing compared to their hospitality.

Sharon carried the nickname “The Duchess”; she was the matriarch of the family and retained her position as head of the family after Gus passed.

Sharon never missed a Tuesday morning hair appointment with her dear friend Karen Levis, wearing the same hairstyle since high school. Sharon spent every evening in her best housecoat with hairpins and hair tape watching her favorite TV programs. She was the best jitterbug dancer around and was often looking for a dancing partner or a student to teach. Sharon was idolized for her cleaning, ironing and organizational skills; there was simply nobody that can keep a house like Sharon.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Pat Monson and her children, Allison (Matt) Glidden and Dan Monson and his son Zach, Greg (Paula) Monson and their children Emily, Meg and Luke. Sharon had two daughters Kym Kantaris and Dena Hahn, Grandchildren Mary (Brian) DeZiel and their children, Alex, Niko and Sophia, Caroline (Matthew) Bennett and their sons Austin, Ashton, Ryan and Ethan, Natalie Morel, Kristofer Hahn and his son Benjamin, Katherine (Dustin) Beckman and their daughters Emma and Ansley. Aunt Ila and Uncle Clyde.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Vietta and Eugene Thornton, Husband Gus Kantaris, children Tony and Jami Kantaris, and brother-in-law Dean Monson.
