January 04, 2015MASON CITY -- Mercedes M. Hentges, 92, of Mason City, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Alta Vista. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. A Catholic Daughters Rosary will be held at 5 p.m. following by a Scriptural Wake Service at 5:30 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Mercedes Hentges Memorial Fund.

Mercedes was born Feb. 9, 1922, in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Ben and Anna (Daley) Kramer. She graduated from St. Williams High School in Alta Vista. Mercedes attended Mason City Junior College, Mount St. Claire College and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. She taught rural schools in Chickasaw County and later at Holy Family Catholic School in Mason City.
She married Robert P. Hentges Feb. 6, 1946, in Alta Vista. They moved to Mason City in 1949. Mercedes was a member of Epiphany Parish, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and church guild. A few of her interests included reading, sewing, gardening, cooking and entertaining.
She was an avid card player and was instrumental in organizing card groups while living at the Good Shepherd Health Center. The family would like to thank the staff for the care Mercedes received while she was a resident there.
Mercedes is survived by two sons, James "Jim" (Vickie) Hentges of Mason City and John "Jack" Hentges of West Salem, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Allison (Mike) Antes of Center Point, Melissa (Ben) Swyter of Mason City and Ben Hentges of Cedar Rapids; three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Trevor and Sydney; one brother, Norbert (Joyce) Kramer of New Hampton; one sister, Shirley Ptachek of Cresco.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents; a sister in infancy, Elaine; husband, Robert; Jack's special friend, Debra Woodliff; many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
