George Stockberger June 13, 1936-February 16, 2018
George Stockberger died peacefully, in the presence of his loving family, on Friday, February 16, 2018 at the Muse Norris Hospital Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A private memorial service is planned at a later date to celebrate George's life, in accordance with his wishes. Should friends desire, memorials in George's name may be directed to the Salvation Army or Hospice of North Iowa.
George Almon Stockberger was born June 13, 1936 to Fred and Irene Stockberger of Mason City.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1954, and began to work full time in his family's business. George continued his work at Stockberger Transfer and Storage until the business was sold. He was then employed by Interstate Motor Trucks in Mason City until his retirement.
George married the love of his life, Mary L. Skipton, on October 31, 1953. George and Mary raised their three children in Mason City.
George enjoyed hunting, fishing and wood-working his entire life. Following his retirement, he worked to perfect his wood-working craft. He was renowned for his meticulous finish work.
First and foremost, we remember George as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. When friends or family needed help, George was always there to provide practical advice and hands-on assistance.
He was a tolerant and compassionate man, with high ethical standards. He always encouraged his children and grandchildren to treat others well, follow their dreams and achieve at the highest level.
George had a wonderful sense of humor, if somewhat ascerbic at times. He always loved dogs and grew to tolerate cats. He cared deeply for nature and wildlife - keeping a heated bird bath out during cold Iowa winters.
George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary, of Mason City; three children, Lorene (Larry) Lomax of Arkadelphia, AR, John (Juli) Stockberger of Eden Prairie, MN, Jodie Stockberger of Mason City, IA; grandchildren, Joelle (Justin), Sarah (Peter), Jordan, Morgan, Shayne, Miles, Caitlin and Emma; great grandchildren, Lilah, Cora and Adeline; sisters-in-law, Vera Stockberger of Mason City, Jo Pedelty of Clear Lake, Shirley Peterson of Clear Lake; brothers-in-law, James Rasmussen of Mason City, Frank Weiss of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lloyd, Richard and Ronald Stockberger; sisters Winnifred Rasmussen, Viola Fisk, Betty Clark, Ellen Weiss.
We would like to thank the staff of Mercy Medical Center and the Muse Norris Hospice for the special care you gave to George.
