Ellen R. Anderson, 97, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the North Ridge Village, Ames, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Austin Wilker officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 PM Monday with a scripture wake service at 6:30 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Ellen was born March 10, 1920 the daughter of Leo and Ellen (Luth) Colsch in New Albin, Iowa. Ellen lived and attended school in Charles City and New Albin and later graduated from New Albin High School in 1937. She went on to receive her diploma from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1941. Ellen met her future husband while he was her patient. They were married on November 4, 1941 at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City, IA.
Ellen's passion was nursing, and her dedication was well known as she cared for everyone. She was a dedicated RN at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for 36 years retiring in 1985. She was extremely proud of her five daughters achievements and loved telling her friends about them. Ellen was a gifted story teller. Her passion to listen and learn was something she shared with everyone. She loved to visit and make new friends. She knew no stranger and made everyone feel at home when she was around. Over the years Ellen enjoyed her outings with her nursing colleagues. She volunteered for many years at Mercy Hospital and Birthrite.
Ellen was a member of the Mercy Alumni Association, Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Veronica Circle.
Those thankful for having shared in Ellen's life include her children, Karen (Gary) Van Buskirk, Janice (Joseph) Huff-Alexander, Diane (Virgil) Goodrich, Mary (Adonis) Kassinos, Jane (Brian) Hurd; one sister, Mary Mackin; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter and a special friend, Garang Garang.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Emerson; one sister, Cecilia Braheny; three brothers, Peter, John and Alfred Colsch; and two grandchildren.
