Merlyn Ulrich, 90, of Mason City, passed away March 2, 2017, at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (March 7, 2017) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ed Bard officiating.

Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of North Iowa.

Merlyn was born Oct. 30, 1926, the son of Lloyd and Clara (Merkel) Ulrich, Klemme, Iowa. He attended Clear Lake High School. After high school he was drafted in to the United States Army, he served in WWII.

Merlyn was united in marriage to Geneva (Garlock) on April 19, 1947, and to this union one child was born.

He worked at Lehigh Portland Cement plant, Mason City, as a bricklayer in the kilns. Merlyn attended NIACC for a welding certificate. He worked as a welder until his retirement in 1989 after 38 years at Lehigh.

He was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 733.

Merlyn enjoyed camping, shooting pool, playing accordion and guitar with his father and brother, spending time with family and grandchildren.

Merlyn is survived by his wife, Geneva “GG” Ulrich; daughter, Lark (Joseph) Trygstad; three grandchildren, Shane, Keith and Heather Gene Simon; sister, Beverly Gates; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Clara Ulrich; stepmother, Florence Ulrich; three brothers, Richard, Lowell and Ronald Ulrich; three sisters, Linda Quinoes, Sharlyene Baird, and Roberta Meyer; close cousin, Marvin Wade.
