Richard Lunning, 88, of Swaledale, passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at his home.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant View Cemetery, Swaledale, with Veteran’s Honors.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton.

Memorials may be directed to his family at P.O. Box 21, Swaledale, IA 50477.

Richard Glenn Lunning was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Mason City, a son of Harry and Lyda (Vekre) Lunning. He graduated from Mason City High School. He served in the U.S. Army.

Richard worked for Henkel Construction and also as a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing traveling and bird watching.

On Dec. 5, 1959, Richard was united in marriage with Sharron Lee Riekens in Charles City.

Family members include his wife of 56 years: Sharron; daughter: Cynthia (David) Rizzuto; son: Douglas (Ann) Lunning; 6 grandchildren: Jeremy (Mikala) Lunning; Nina (Owen) Anderson; Jennifer (Zack) Joens; Eric (Randi) Schimmel; Sherry (Santiago Sanchez Warner) Rizzuto; David Rizzuto Jr.; 7 great-grandchildren: Olivia, Kaylen, James, Isabella, Santiago ‘Little T’, Maddison and Carlee; sister: LaVonne Baker.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters.
