James Dean Nelson, 56, of Thornton, Iowa, died Saturday, June 28, 1997 at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), July 2, at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.
James Dean Nelson was born on Sept. 6, 1940 on his parent’s farm near Thornton, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Rose (Nicolet) Nelson. He attended the Thornton school system graduating with the class of 1959. He attended the University of Iowa for a short time before starting to farm in 1961.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Arlene Burma of Thornton on July 30, 1961, in the St. Paul American Lutheran Church of Thornton. They made their home farming near Thornton. James enjoyed reading, visiting with family and friends, flying, spending time with his grandchildren and traveling. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, Thornton; one daughter, Sherry Hansen and her husband, Jeff, Clear Lake; two sons, Douglas Nelson and his wife, Linda, Clear Lake and Darren Nelson of Iowa City, Iowa; five grandchildren, Sarah, Andy and Eric Hansen and Alex and Ben Nelson; three brothers, Marvin Nelson and his wife, Jonnie, Parker, Colo., LaVerne Nelson and his wife, Eleanor of Clear Lake, and Willard Nelson of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
