MASON CITY -- Alice Anne Blackmore, age 93, died peacefully Sunday morning, Nov. 10, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Alice Anne was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Mason City, the daughter of Louis A. Moore and Stella Adams Moore. She graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in home economics. During War War II she lived in Albuquerque, N.M., and supervised a military base food service.

Alice Anne Moore and William W. (Bill) Blackmore married Nov. 26, 1949. They had three children: William (Bill), Michael and Ellen.

In the late 1950s Alice Anne discovered what became her lifelong passion for rescuing abandoned animals and finding them new homes. In 1959, Alice Anne founded the Pet Assistance League, which eventually became the Humane Society of North Iowa. For approximately 20 years she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of thousands of homeless pets.

Alice Anne was a lover of nature, poetry, literature and good food. She was a generous and loyal friend to many, and she had a wonderful circle of lifelong friends in the Mason City community.

Alice Anne is survived by her sisters: Carol Smith of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Ellen Moore of La Crosse, Wis.; children: Bill (and Martha) of Fairfield, Iowa; Mike (and Kathy Broman) of Mason City; Ellen, of Boulder, Colo.; grandchildren: William (Willy) and partner Jennifer Banash, Lee Anne and Louis; great-granddaughter, Story Blackmore; nieces and nephews: Steve Smith, Shelley Smith Richardson, Louis Colescott, Julian Colescott and Lydia Scott.

Alice Anne was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nephew Shawn Smith.

A life celebration gathering is planned for the summer of 2014.

Memorials may be sent to the Humane Society of North Iowa.
