Gene D. Mallo, 85, of Mason City, died Sunday morning (June 29, 2014) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City with his loving wife by his side.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday (July 3, 2014) at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City, with a one hour visitation preceding the service.

Pastor Martha Bennett will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Mason City Veterans.

Inurnment will take place at a future date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Gene’s name in care of his wife, Doreen, to Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel.

Gene Darrol Mallo was born on February 5, 1929, in Mason City, the youngest son of Jacob and Myrna (Gardner) Mallo. He attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1948 before enlisting in the United States Air Force.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Gene returned to North Iowa where he held various jobs throughout the next few years. Eventually Gene found his niche at the Post Office in Mason City where he worked for several years until his retirement.

Gene put family above all else. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He cherished the time spent with his family and friends and enjoyed music, dancing, hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a devoted Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and New York Yankees fan.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife of 37 years, Doreen; 3 children; 3 step-children; as well as his grandchildren and extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Myrna Mallo, and his brother, Cecil Mallo.
