George Edward Newman was born on January 15, 1938 in Mason City to Hector and Clara (Gross) Newman. He grew up in Mason City and began working for the Mason City school systems at the age of 16. George graduated from Mason City High School. He married the love of his life, Sharon L. O'Green. Sharon passed away in 2007. George served his country honorably in the United States Military. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to his job within the Mason City School system, where he retired after over 45 years.

George was a Jack of All Trades. He found enjoyment in fixing things, whether it was a car, electrical work, or wood working. George took pride in his home, making sure his lawn and belongings were in good condition. Each month George would get together with his classmates for dinner, and many Friday nights were spent together with Sharon at the North-Western Steak House. George wore many hats, but the most important one to him was being the caretaker of his family. He enjoyed spending time with them and supporting them in their adventures.

Left to cherish George's memory are his son, Thomas (Val Otterson) Newman of Swaledale, IA; sister, Mardel Conradson of New Hartford, IA; sisters-in-law, Carolee Kissel and Becky O'Green; special classmates, Karen Shultz and Lowell Butler; friends Marlin and Ruby Hammje; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and neighbors.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hector and Clara, wife, Sharon, brothers, Ralph Newman and Robert “Bob” Newman, and Sharon's parents, Arlene and Arthur O'Green and his companion and favorite dog, Panda.
