The Rev. Roger L. Katz, 79, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, July 2, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on July 7, 2014 at Epiphany Parish-Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with Archbishop Michael O. Jackels as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening, July 6, 2014, at Epiphany Parish-Holy Family Catholic Church from 4 to 6 p.m., with a Scriptural Wake service beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Roger’s name in care of his family.

Roger LeRoy Katz was born on July 26, 1934, in Mason City, the son of Ernest and Genevieve (Stork) Katz. He attended and graduated from Holy Family Catholic High School.

Prior to his ordination Roger served as high school teacher at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Dyersville and Mason City Public Schools. In 1965 Roger was appointed assistant secretary of agriculture of Iowa and also held various positions with the Iowa Democratic Party campaigns.

On June 24, 1989, he was ordained at the Church of the Nativity in Dubuque by Archbishop Daniel Kucera, OSB.

Throughout the years Roger served at Holy Ghost Parish, Dubuque, 1989-1990; Immaculate Conception Parish, Charles City and St. Mary Parish, Roseville, 1990-1992; St. Wenceslaus and St. Ludmila Parishes, Cedar Rapids, 1992; St. Bridget Parish, Postville and St. Clermont, 1992-1994; and Holy Name Parish, Rockford, 1994-1998. He also held a part time position as a chaplain at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa from 1994-1997 before his retirement on Dec. 1, 1998.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his sister, Catherine (Larry) Roth, Aiken, S.C.; his aunt, Sr. Priscilla Stork; his nephews, Trent (Shari) Roth and Troy (Julie) Roth; and his niece, Teresa (Dan) Palmen.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
