MASON CITY — Marvin T. Esser, 86, of Mason City, passed away peacefully Friday, July 1, 2016, at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where a flag-folding ceremony will be conducted by Mason City Veterans.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, July 5, 2016, at the funeral chapel, and one hour prior to services, Wednesday.

Marv was born August 3, 1929, at Rockford, a son of Theodore and Lela (Dugan) Esser. He was united in marriage to Betty L. Holt on November 19, 1950, in Mason City.

Marv attended rural schools and graduated from Rockwell High School in 1947. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Marv returned home and began raising his family while working in the livestock business, including Decker’s, Central Livestock, and various part-time jobs.

Marv was a selfless, humble husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his life and they all loved and cherished time spent with him.

Marv was an active member of the VFW and enjoyed the atmosphere and acceptance he felt there. A friend to many, he knew what was really important in life.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Esser, Mason City; daughters, Connie (Mark) Knudtson, Osage; Deb (Don) Schultz, Marion, IA; Janet (Brian) Bechtel, Mason City; Don (Lynn) Esser, Mason City; grandchildren, Anne (Aaron) Street, Osage, Joe (Katie) Knudtson, Blaine, MN, Tom (Catherine) Knudtson, Madison, WI, Nate (Liz Craig) Schultz, Iowa City, Abbie (Joe) Derby, Castle Rock, CO, Mitch Schultz, Iowa City, Elizabeth (Jason) Moore, Coralville, James (Theresa) Bechtel, Iowa City, Ben Bechtel, Iowa City, Reed (Christina) McManigal, Des Moines, Paige (Jay) Akins, Costa Mesa, CA, Jack Esser, West Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Meredith, Quinn, Cooper, Molly, Will, Chloe, Theodore, Willow, Zane, Ava, Nola, Maddox, Amelie, Mariella, Henrietta, Gus, Gigi, and another arriving in the fall; sister, Myrna Joumas, Clawson, MI; brother, Alan (Melanie) Esser, Mankato, MN; several nieces and nephews and family members.

Marv was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, JoAnn Davis.

May his memory live long in the hearts of those who loved him.
