John was born February 15, 1934, the son of John “Jack” and Leta Boehm, in Storm Lake. John’s mother died when he was 8 months old; he was then raised by his uncle and aunt, William and Teda Welhousen. He graduated from Titonka High School in 1952.

When John met his wife, Amy, he declared his intent to marry on their first date. They wed on October 15, 1955, at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka. John and Amy shared nearly 63 years of marriage together. The first couple years were spent in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where John served in the U.S. Army. Later, they moved to Clear Lake to establish their home.

John was a driver-salesman for the Clear Lake Bakery on the Mason City route for 37 years. He enjoyed life-long friendships with fellow drivers and community members. John enjoyed spending time with his many friends, meeting for coffee, and playing cards.

John loved the outdoors. He spent many hours watching eagles build their nests and raise their young. He enjoyed fishing locally and in Alaska, hunting ducks, geese and prairie dogs with friends.

John loved his family deeply and enjoyed spending quality time with his daughter, Tammy, farming with his son-in-law, Mike, and watching his grandchildren, Bethany, Joel and Casey, grow. He demonstrated how to be a good friend and role model for his foster son and neighborhood kids, through these close relationships they became like “sons” to him.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, Elks Club and Clear Lake Senior Citizens Board. John and Amy were the first financial contributors to start Handicap Village (now One Vision), in honor of their daughter, Lisa.
