Marcia was born on May 7, 1928, in Waterloo, the daughter of Herbert and Merle (Sanborn) Kerr. Marcia moved with her parents to Mason City at the age of 2, and attended the Mason City Community Schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1946. She also attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Marcia married Jack Doughman in January 1948 and they were blessed with four children, Deborah, David, Sheril, and Richard. The family lived in Des Moines, Iowa Falls, and Nevada Iowa.

Jack and Marcia were divorced and Marcia returned to Mason City. She married William “Bill” Burke on April 13, 1973, and soon they were settled in their beautiful lake home.

Marcia worked at the Mental Health Center and Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City before working as an administrative assistant to the superintendent at the Clear Lake High School until her retirement in 1990.

Marcia loved her parents, sister, friends and extended family and the memories of her time spent in Lime Springs with her grandparents and cousins were very dear to her. She loved school and enjoyed attending class reunions and monthly class breakfasts until recently.

Marcia learned the value of a dollar from her parents, a trait she maintained throughout her life. This didn’t stop her from appreciating the finer things like a really good steak or a pretty dress from Lundberg’s back in the day. Marcia and Jack raised four children on a tight budget but made sure the kids had the opportunity to take music, dance and swimming lessons and play sports. Jack and Marcia were avid golfers. Their house was filled with books and music. Marcia was a wonderful cook, she sewed many of her girls’ clothes and she refinished furniture she found at auctions. Marcia perfected the “look” that, even as adults, her children recognized as a warning to stop whatever they were doing. Marcia’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren meant the world to her.

Marcia was a beautiful feisty woman with a gorgeous smile. She loved to laugh and anyone who knew Marcia could recognize her laugh even in a crowded room. When Marcia met Bill it was a match made in heaven because he made her laugh every single day. Marcia and Bill loved to travel to warmer climates but were happiest at the lake. The best day was one spent on the boat with family and friends. They also loved cats and took in a series of strays, kittens and adult cats, throughout the years. Marcia’s last cat, Max, brought her comfort and companionship.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, and enjoyed playing Bridge in several Bridge Clubs.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Deb (Roger) Samson of Nevada, Dave (Lindsay Parker) Doughman of Corvallis, OR, Sheri (Joe Larson) Doughman of Minneapolis, MN, and Rich Doughman of Mason City; her grandchildren, Rick Samson, Allison (Tom) Bell, Jessica (Joe) Alonzo, Ariel Doughman, Peter Larson, and Jack Larson, Heather (Chris) Sampson, Zoe and Logan Parker; her great-grandchildren, Miles Bell, Selena, Natalia and Wade Alonzo; Emmalee Doughman;, C.J., Colt, and Clete Sampson; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Merle Kerr; her husband, “Bill” Burke, her sister, Myrna Nelson, and by her ex-husband Jack Doughman.

The family wants to express their deep gratitude and affection for the wonderful and loving support shown to their mother by her neighbors and friends, particularly for all they did to bring joy to the last few months of Marcia’s life.
