Vernyce “Verny” A. Ellickson, 72, of Clear Lake, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center, in Mason City, Iowa.

Per Verny’s wishes, her body has been donated to Mayo Clinic for medical education, research, surgical training, and development. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 1 p.m. at Clear Lake Christian Church with the Reverend Drew Rietjens officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at noon.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorial contributions to Kids Wish Network, Mayo Clinic Pulmonary Research Development, or Salvation Army.

Verny was born Nov. 26, 1943, the daughter of Harry and Blossom (Nordley) Benson in Valley City, N.D. She was united in marriage to Robert Simonson in 1966, and to this union, two children were born, Paul and Theresa. She later married James Ellickson, and they became the parents of a daughter, Carina.

A graduate of Valley City High School, class of 1961, Verny began working at the Woolworth Store and American National Bank in Valley City. She worked as a payroll clerk at an anti-ballistic missile site in Hope, N.D. before moving to East Grand Forks, Minn., where she worked at First National Bank and Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. It was there that she enjoyed being part of the community as well as teaching Sunday school, and being a Girl Scout leader.

After a promotion to Supervisor of Business Marketing with the telephone company, she was asked to represent Northwestern Bell on the Divestiture Contract Task Force at AT&T headquarters in Morristown, N.J. After 10 months in New Jersey and New York, she accepted a promotion for the same position at AT&T in Des Moines, Iowa. After the Iowa office closed, she and Jim moved to Chicago, where they retired from AT&T and moved to Clear Lake. Verny worked for the Clear Lake Telephone Company before opening a health food business during retirement.

Verny was born and raised in the Lutheran faith and served 26 years as a Sunday school teacher, seven years as a youth group leader, and two years on an executive board. She delighted in sharing her faith. Her biggest joy in life was people of all kinds and ages. She felt she could learn from anyone.

Verny is survived by her loving husband, Jim Ellickson, of Clear Lake; three children, Paul Simonson, of Grand Forks, N.D., Terry (John) Loske, of Lexington, S.C. and Carina (Dennis, Jr.) Coonfield of Omaha, Neb.; a granddaughter, Shannon Loske, of Lexington; a sister, Cheryl (Roger) Wagner, of Crookston, Minn.; six nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
