MASON CITY - Mathilda A. Freeden, 98, of 1037 Nineteenth St. S.W., died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour before the services at the church Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to St. James Lutheran Church.

Mathilda A. Freeden was born Jan. 26, 1903, in Madison, Wis., to William and Marie (Leitz) Buege. She attended Madison High School and attended nurses training in West Side Hospital, Chicago. She returned to Madison where she worked at St. Mary's Hospital.

On Sept. 8, 1927, she was united in marriage with Carl R. Freeden in Alliance, S.D. They moved to Mason City where she worked at the Park Hospital for over 30 years.

Mathilda was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the church circle as well as formerly a member of the Tenth District Nurses Association.

She enjoyed gardening and giving away her produce.

Mathilda is survived by her daughter, Marie Whipple and her husband, Lon, Rock Falls; a son, Robert Freeden and his wife, Marlene, Mason City; grandsons, Michael Freeden, Opportunity Village, Robert Whipple and his wife, Roxanne, Rock Falls, and Lee Whipple and his wife, Kelly, Waseca, Minn.; a granddaughter, Carlene Gonerman, Mason City; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a daughter in infancy.
