Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, IowaWord was recieved Saturday by Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Baldwin, Grafton, of the death of their son Marine PFC Kenneth Baldwin by hostile fire in Viet Nam August 18. Marine Major Elliott of Waterloo personally contacted the family, and official notifiction was received through Western Union Sunday.
According to Sunday's communiqe, Baldwin died in a defensive position on Thau Thien Province, Vietnam of a gunshot head wound from hostile rifle fire and fragmentation wounds from hostile mortar fire. Baldwin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in July, 1967. and was sent to Vietnam December 25 of that year. He took basic training at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Calif. and attended heavy artillery school. He was last home following basic training in October.
Born December 20, 1948, in Mason City, he had attended the Mason City elementary schools. He attended St. Ansgar Community High School and was graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School with the class of 1967. He was a member of the Emmannuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.
He is survived by his parents, Mr.& Mrs. Kenneth Baldwin, and three sisters, Mrs. Roy {Jeanette} Albertus, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Kenneth {Darlene} Hamilton, Aurora, Ill, and Mrs. Geraldine Dunlap at home.
Military services are pending the arrival of the body. Schroeder and Haug Funeral Home St. Ansgar is making arrangements. Burial will be in Grafton Cemetery.
