MASON CITY -- William Curtis, 72, of 346 Willowbrook Drive, died Sunday (July 7, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. Rodney Holmberg officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There is no visitation. The body will be cremated. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

William E. Curtis was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Franz and Jessie (Prall) Curtis.

He graduated from Mason City High School in 1941 and that same year enlisted in the United States Navy.

William served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was discharged in 1947.

He married Betty Hunt in Mason City in 1945.

He worked as a civil engineer for Wallace, Holland, Kastler, Schmitz and Company for many years, retiring in 1985. During that time, 11 years were spent in Cedar Rapids working as a civilengineer.

William married Mary Dresser on June 25, 1975, in Mason City.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Mason City; daughters, Annette Webber of Iowa Falls; Paulette Appel and her husband, Bob, of Norton, Va.; Lisa Curtis and her husband, James Wolf, of Orlando, Fla.; stepdaughters, Deborah Knowles and her husband, Jack, of Rapid City, S.D.; Judith Venz and her husband, Michael, of Rochester, Minn.; and stepson, Sotirios Biris (Bill Dresser) of Beeville, Texas; sisters, Betty Grelk and her husband, Otto, of Mason City, and Caroline Braastad and her husband, Calvin, of Mason City; 14 grandchildren, Lindsey, Bryan and Natalie Webber, Heather, Robert and Portia Appel, John, Robert, Meghan, Elizabeth and Jennifer Knowles and Katherine, Robert and David Venz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Franz Curtis; an infant son, David; and an infant granddaughter, Allison.
