Harriet M. Burnett, 78, of 522 First St. N.E., died Tuesday (April 9, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Charles Q. Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There is no visitation, as her wish was cremation.

Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave,. is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Harriet was born in Laurens, on April 6, 1918, to Sigurd and Andrea (Nelsen) Carlsen.

She graduated from Laurens High School in 1935 and attended Northern Iowa University.

She taught school in several North Iowa schools before coming to Mason City in 1946.

She received a B.A. degree from Northern Iowa University in 1962.

She married Michael Burnett in 1950. She and her husband taught school and managed their own apartments for many years. Mr. Burnett died in 1964.

Harriet retired from teaching in 1976. She loved the outdoors and spent hours raising flowers and landscaping her home.

She traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, North America and the Islands.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, We Serve God Circle. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Christian Women, Retired School Personnel and A.A.R.P.

Survivors include one son, Fred Burnett and his wife, Mary Ann, of Mason City; two sisters, Mildred Carlsen of Mason City, and Dorothy Burkhart and her husband, Bill, of Deerfield, Ill.; and nephews and nieces in Iowa, California, Texas, Kansas and Connecticut.
