September 19, 1997MASON CITY -- Brigadier Alice M. Bollwahn, 79, of 1205 Ninth St. S.W., died Tuesday (Sept. 16, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Salvation Army, 203 First St. S.W., Mason City, with Col. Milford Hickam, Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army, Omaha, Neb., officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Alden Cemetery, Alden, Ill.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the Salvation Army.
Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army in memory of Brigadier Alice M. Bollwahn.
Brigadier Alice M. Bollwahn was born on April 23, 1918, the daughter of Daniel and Alice (Nelson) Evans in Williamsburg, Iowa.
Alice was active in the Presbyterian Church and followed her mother in vocal and piano music.
Upon the family moving to Newton, Iowa, Alice attended and graduated from Newton High School in 1935.
Alice began attending the Salvation Army and while attending Coe College in Cedar Rapids, she dedicated her life to the ministry. Alice graduated from the Salvation Army College for Officers' Training with the rank of lieutenant and was ordained in June of 1938.
She married Captain Ellis Bollwahn on Jan. 3, 1940, in Janesville, Wis. Together they served as pastors and community workers with The Salvation Army in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa, for 41 years, retiring in 1979 from the Mason City Corps/Community Center.
Brigadier Bollwahn was active in civic and community affairs, such as Altrusa Club, Business and Professional Women's Club and Church Women United.
An accomplished musician, she performed as well as organized and directed youth and senior vocal and instrumental groups.
Survivors include her husband, Brigadier Ellis Bollwahn, Mason City; son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Colonels Paul and Ronda Bollwahn, Alexandria, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mary Hill, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Gwyndel Evans, Beverly Hills, Calif., Joshua Bollwahn, Denver, Colo., and Lindsay Bollwahn, Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Miriam Johnson and her husband, Frank, of Rockford, Ill.; two close cousins, Jane Anderson, Rapid City, S.D., and Rebecca Doolittle and her husband, Bob, Cedar Rapids; and a host of family and friends who mourn but also rejoice in her "Promotion to Glory."
She was preceded in death by her parents; and oldest son, William, a resident of Mason City, in 1992.
