MASON CITY - Kenneth F. Alert, 64, of 14581 230th St., died unexpectedly Sunday (March 31, 2002) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Highway 122 East, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph's Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Ken was an active member serving in various positions and was involved in the planning and construction of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Ken was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Hampton, the son of Fred L. and Mary (Haupt) Alert and step-mother, Lillian (Hartwig) Alert. He graduated from Hampton High School and served in the National Guard.

Ken was united in marriage to Linda M. Groh on Sept. 10, 1961, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. C. A. Hinz.

They farmed near Hampton until 1967, then moved to Mason City where Ken became a partner with his father-in-law, Karl Groh, in the excavating business. In addition to excavating, in 1975 Ken resumed his love of farming in the Mason City area.

He was a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for 20 years. He especially enjoyed family gatherings with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Those grateful for sharing his life include his wife of 40 years, Linda, of Mason City; son, Doug Alert and wife, Margaret Smith and their children, Robert and William, of Hampton; daughter, Pamela Lage and husband, Mark, and their children, Ryan and Jacob of Sheffield; daughter, Joanne Eden and husband, Daryl, and their children, Levi and Cole, of Titonka; son, Kevin Alert and wife, Mary, and daughter, Ashley, of Mason City; sister, Esther Goslin and husband, Don, of Westmoreland, Tenn.

Ken was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepmother and brother, Harold Alert.
