CLEAR LAKE - Maynard C. Nielsen, 92, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Graveside services will be Saturday 1:30 p.m. at the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Maynard was born Aug. 25, 1908, in Miller, Iowa the son of Martin and Hilda (Evenson) Nielsen. He attended school in Miller. Maynard married Loretta Kelly on June 25, 1930, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Following their marriage they moved to Forest City to live.

Maynard worked at the hatchery in Forest City and later worked for the Forest City Produce picking up eggs. Later he sold eggs on his own. After retiring he worked part time as custodian for the Forest City School and did cleaning at Bowen's grocery.

In 1981 they moved to Ventura, Iowa, and lived there until 1989 and then moved to Clear Lake, Iowa.

Maynard enjoyed pitching horseshoes, shooting pool at the Clear Lake Senior Citizens, fishing, playing cards, photography and watching the birds while living by the marsh in Ventura.

During his stay at the Oakwood Care Center he was nominated Valentine King and was also resident of the month in February. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Maynard is survived by his daughter, Rosemary Meyers and her husband, Steve, of Clear Lake; two sons-in-law, Shaun McDaid, of Mason City, and Dick Schmidt, of Crete, Neb.; one sister, Ruby Lenz, of Garner; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

His parents; two daughters, Marilyn McDaid and Janette Schmidt; one son, Gerald Nielsen; his wife, Loretta, in 1999; great-granddaughter, Breanne White; and one sister, Pearl Golbuff, preceded him in death.
