Obituary ~ PFC E2 John Leo Tracy
September 18, 1948 ~ August 30, 1968

John Leo Tracy, son of Robert L. Tracy and Claire V. Tracy of Swaledale Iowa, enlisted in the US Marie Corps on December 4, 1967 in Des Moines IA. He arrived in Vietnam on May 31, 1968 where he was assigned to and served as a rifleman with Company G, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of August the Battalion was conducting combat operations in Quang Tri Province. On August 30, while participating on Operation SCOTLAND II – TROUSDALE some 10 kilometers west of the “Rockpile” - the Marines of Company G discovered NVA fortifications and during their destruction were engaged by the enemy. Hit by rifle fire, command detonated mines, and mortar fire several men were wounded. PFC John Tracy was killed by the exploding shrapnel from the enemy mortar fire. He was nineteen years old.

PFC Tracy was interred at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell, Iowa. He is honored on Panel 45W, Row 10 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

PFC Tracy was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
