Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, IowaROCKWELL - Vincent J. Schmitt, 76, of Rockwell, died Saturday (Nov. 4, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, with the Rev. Leo Riley, the Rev. Thomas McAndrew and Monsignor Ervin Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Parish Center, Rockwell.
Memorials may be directed to the Vincent Schmitt Memorial Fund at P.O. Box 280, Rockwell, IA 50469.
Vincent was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Roseville, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Sinnwell) Schmitt. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Boston and the USS Colorado.
Vincent was united in marriage to Arlene Tiemessen on Sept. 9, 1947, in North Washington. The couple farmed in Rockford for several years and then moved to Rockwell in 1968. Since his retirement from farming, Vincent enjoyed many trips to visit children and grandchildren across the country. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Forresters. He loved his frequent excursions to the casinos and was a familiar face at the local coffee shop. No one enjoyed playing cards, a practical joke, or a good story more than Vince. His many family and friends will miss him dearly.
Vince is survived by his wife of 53 years, Arlene, Rockwell; eight children and their spouses, Bev and Jeff Van Blair, of Newton, Nancy and Mick Milligan, of Glendale, Ariz., Joyce and Ted Bieth, of Plymouth, Pat and John Ferin, of Ankeny, Karen and Larry Hamilton, of Kansas City, Mo., Dan and Diane Schmitt, of Cockeysville, Md., Dale and Jenni Schmitt, of Peoria, Ariz., and Julie and Doug Sheriff, of Rockwell; eighteen grandchildren, Katie, Dave and his wife, Amy, Andy and his wife, Lisa, Jenny, Mike, Sarah and her husband, Carl, Annie, Molly, Brian, Joe, Lisa, Erin, Christopher, Audrey, Amanda, Emily, Elliot and Haley; four great-grandchildren, Chloe, Alexis, Kaitlyn and Chase; two brothers, Monsignor Ervin Schmitt, of Pueblo, Colo., and Bill Schmitt and his wife, Oril, of Charles City; one sister, Evelyn Hosch and her husband, Dan, of Pensacola, Fla.; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Vince was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter, Jessica.
