Donald M. (Donnie/Barney) Barnes, 64, of Oregon City, Oregon, formerly of Sheffield, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015, at Oregon City Hospital. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p. m. on Saturday, September 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, Iowa. Visitation will be held at Sacred Heart School one hour before the mass. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Retz Funeral Home in Sheffield, Iowa, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Donnie was an organ donor.

Born on July 10, 1951 in Mason City, Iowa, to George and Patricia (Paulsen) Barnes, Donnie was the fourth of their ten children. He graduated from Sheffield-Chapin High School. On October 20, 1973, he married Marlene Kohagen at Readlyn, Iowa. Three children were born to this union.

Donnie was a career Navy man, entering in February 1971. He served sea duty on two ships, the USS Ajax and the USS William H. Standley (CG-32), which were based in San Diego. He was also stationed at Dayton, Ohio, Bremerton, Washington, Charleston, SC, and in Scotland. He retired from active duty with the rank of HTCS Senior Chief Petty Officer (Damage Controlman).

After retiring from the Navy, he lived in Portland, Oregon. He was a member of Saint Philip Neri Catholic Church, and was helpful in many facets of parish life, from the annual spaghetti supper to using his carpenter skills during the church's renovation. He was especially proud of the baptismal font that he created for the Easter vigil. He was a friend to parishioners, and known for his jovial disposition.

He later married Sharon Meucci in Portland; they divorced in 2006. He worked for Goodwill Industries in Portland, preparing homes for sale, and did home renovation for realtors; he later was self-employed as a certified home inspector. He enjoyed using his talent for carpentry to help people in his neighborhood.

Survivors include his three children: Kristina (Karl) Ott, Geneseo, Ill.; Nathan (Nicole) Barnes, Readlyn, Ia; Courtney (Jared) Parkes, Janesville, Ia.; Grandchildren Riley and Benjamin Ott; Garrett, Reagan and Maya Barnes; and Brielle, Emerie, and Aurilla Parkes. Also two sisters: Mary (Gerry) Frimml, Atkinson, Ill. and Jane (Michael) Clay, Mason City, Ia.; Seven brothers: George C. (Sheryl) Barnes III, Ida Grove, Ia.; David (Monica) Barnes, Plymouth, Ia.; Jon (Joan) Barnes, Plymouth, Ia.; Paul (Colleen) Barnes, Sheffield, Ia.; Andrew (Janet) Barnes, Emmetsburg, Ia.; Martin (Debbie) Barnes, Sheffield, Ia., and Dan Barnes, Plymouth, Ia.

He was preceeded in death by his father, George, and his first wife, Marlene.

Retz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
