John Ernest Beery, son of Everett George and Mary Louise (Issacson) Beery was born July 10, 1934 in Rock Falls, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1952. Shortly after his education, he enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1953. He was part of the Formosa Patrol on the USS Luzon in the South China Sea during the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged in September of 1957.

In 1958, Johnny began working as a machinist at Thomas Machine Company in Mason City. On November 15, 1958, Johnny married the love of his life, Lois Hohenfield, in Mason City, with whom he shared homes in Mason City, East Grand Forks, Minn., and Renville, Minn., due to Johnny working at the Sugar Beet Plant and being transferred all over Minnesota. He was employed at the plant for many years, retiring in 1998. Following his retirement, Johnny and Lois moved back to Mason City to be with their families.

Johnny was an amateur pilot and loved to hunt, camp, and attended many, many Mason City football games and wrestling matches, meeting up with his old buddies there, cheering for our home teams. He enjoyed cards and was an avid reader, literally having a list of ALL nearby town libraries that he and Pete (Lois) would visit on road trips. Most importantly, Johnny was a well rounded character who inspired and helped his family, friends and neighbors.

He was a member of the Mason City VFW.

His memory will be cherished by his sister, Dorothy (Ben Jr.) Ziemann, Belvidere, Ill. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lois “Pete” Beery, in 2012.
