MAYME NICHOLS

Funeral Mass was said at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for Mrs. Ray (Mayme) Nichols, 1000 5th Ave. S.

She died Saturday morning in a Waukesha, Wis., hospital where she was taken about a month ago to be near her son, Bill.

The Rev. James F. Delay, St. Patrick’s pastor, and the Rev. Joseph Sullivan of St. Cecelia’s Church in Ames officiated. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery.

The Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Mary Winifred Nichols was born Sept. 29, 1894, at Goodell, the daughter of Tom and Margaret (Conlan) Monaghen.

She graduated from Garner High School in 1912 and was employed as a bookkeeper at the Sondrol Store in Clear Lake. In 1932 , she opened the Peter Pan Dress Shop on Main Av.

She married Ray H. Nichols April 19, 1934 in Mason City. They lived in Ventura Heights following their marriage until they moved to a North Shore home in 1944. They opened the Nichols Shop at 423 Main Ave. in 1935. Both retired in 1951.

Mr. Nichols died in October, 1955, whereupon Mrs. Nichols resumed operation of the store from 1957 to 1965 when she sold it. She later opened the present Nichols Shop at 407 Main St., operating it until about two and one-half years until Jan. 1972, when she sold it.

She is survived by her son, Bill, Waukesha, Wis.; a sister, Mrs. Barney (Alice) Sweeney, Mason City; two granddaughters and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and a sister.
