Frederick E. "Fritz" Ackerman died on November 11, 2013 at Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday (November 15, 2013) at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastor Sean McRoberts of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where military honors will be provided by the Mason City Veterans.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to Fritz's service on Friday at the funeral chapel.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Fritz's name in care of his family.

Frederick E. Ackerman was born on June 6, 1922 in Carnarvon, Iowa, the only child of William and Jean Ackerman. He attended and graduated from Wall Lake High School in Wall Lake where he was active in sports and sang in the choir with Andy Williams.

Following his high school graduation Fritz enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he honorably served his country during World War II, earning a Purple Heart for injuries received serving in the line of duty. Upon his return to the United States he met Mary Lou Emmons while she was working in the Ship Yard in Bremerton, Washington.

On March 25, 1945 the two were united in marriage in Bremerton, Washington. After their nuptials the couple soon moved to Carroll, Iowa where they would welcome their son, Rick, into their family. The young family would soon move to Sioux City before relocating to Mason City where Fritz began employment with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.

Fritz worked for the railroad for 36 1/2 years as a Boiler Technician before his retirement.

In his free time Fritz enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, and watching sports. He was a "Jack of all trades" who could fix anything that was broken. Together he and Mary Lou lived out their passion for volunteering through donating countless hours to volunteering at Opportunity Village, for the Special Olympics, and various veteran's retirement homes and hospitals. In his earlier years Fritz enjoyed attending his granddaughter's, Abby's, dance recitals and in more recent years he could be found attending the races at the I-35 Speedway, cheering on his grandson, Adam Ackerman.

He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 744 of Mason City and the Disabled American Veterans.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his son, Rick (Lisa) Ackerman, Mason City; grandchildren, Adam Ackerman and his special friend, Rachel Hart, Mason City, and Abby (Brian) Zieman, Meservey; and an expected great grandchild, arriving in April; and his sister in law, Dean Emmons, Little Rock, Arkansas;

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Lou.
