Martin Z. Peterson, 88, retired engineer of the Nothwestern States Portland Cement Co., died Sunday evening at a Mason City hospital. He had lived in Mason City 54 years and made his home at 207 14th NW.
Mrs. Peterson was born March 8, 1874, in Sweden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Samuelson. He attended schools in Sweden and came to the United States in 1892, settling in Minneapolis, where he was a railroad construction worker.
He was married to Cora Householder March 14, 1907, at Avilla, Ind. They came to Mason City from Missouri in 1908 when the Northwestern States Cement Co. plant was beginning. They had lived in Mason City since that time. He retired in January 1949 after 41 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. George (Martha Jane) Rickoff, Mason City, and Mrs. John (Marguerite) Remmers, Fort Wayne, Ind.; a son, Marion Peterson, Philadelphia, eight grandchildren and four great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a son, Maynard M. Peterson, three brothers and a sister.
Mr. Peterson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Golden Wedding Club and the Order of the Calamus. He was the oldest living male member of the First Presbyterian Church and turned the first shovel of dirt for the new church in Willobrook Addition on Easter Sunday, 1956.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. G. Robert Buttrick will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home.
