PASSING OF A PIONEER

At a ripe old age and surrounded by his children there died at his home in Clear Lake on Monday, February 4, 1907, Clarkson Palmer, one of the old settlers of this part of the state, a soldier of the civil war, a good citizen, and a man of the highest integrity. Mr. Palmer’s last illness was of nearly six weeks duration and was the first sickness in his long and busy life. For the last three weeks he partook of scarcely any nourishment and his wonderful vitality was about all that sustained him. His life companion passed from earth last year and the change in him, since that sad event, was noticeable to all.

Clarkson Palmer was born at Stockholm, St. Lawrence County, New York, September 14, 1821. He was united in marriage to Lovina A. Searles, September 16, 1847. Removing from New York they settled in Sauk County, Wisconsin and it was here in the dark days of rebellion that Mr. Palmer responded to his country’s call and enlisted in Co. G., 42nd Wisconsin Infantry, in which he served with credit and honor. The Palmers left Wisconsin in 1869 and came to Iowa, settling in Cerro Gordo County on a farm a short distance southeast of Clear Lake. This was their home until four or five years ago when they moved to town. Mrs. Palmer, who also lived to a ripe old age, died May 29, 1906.

Mr. Palmer is survived by nine children, all of whom but Daniel were with him in his last illness. They are: Mrs. Ella M. Thomas of Ventura, Clark J. Palmer of Rushville, Neb., Henry L. Palmer of Glenville, Minn., Daniel Palmer of Rushville, Neb., Mrs. Rose Hayward of Painesville, Ohio, Mrs. Emma Law of Clear Lake, Geo. W. Palmer of Forest City, Mrs. Belle Kennison of Perry, and Mrs. Grace Olson of Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at the Congregational church at 2 o’clock.

Transcriber’s Note – Clarkson Palmer was born September 14, 1821, died February 4, 1907 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Section 3 Row 5.
