Obituary - Fern E. Wilson

Miss Fern E. Wilson, Roosevelt Junior high school counselor, in Mason City, died Thursday morning, April 21st in a hospital in that city. She had been a teacher in Mason City for many years and made her home at 113 N. Connecticut.

Miss Wilson was born at Clearfield, daughter of David and Sabilla Wilson. She was graduated from Clearfield High School, attended Simpson College at Indianola and Drake University, Des Moines, where she received B.A. and M.A. degrees.

She taught first in Mason City as a science teacher and then was a guidance counselor. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority and Delta Kappa Gamma professional teachers sorority. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Lenox.

Her past professional activities included president of the Junior High School Association, president of the Mason City Education Association, president, chairman of the executive board and National Education Association (NBA) director for the North Central District of the Iowa State Education Assn. (1SEA). She was a life member of the NBA and ISEA, and had been on the NEA committee on juvenile delinquency and took part in the classroom teacher conference in Washington, D.C., on juvenile delinquency.

Her non-professional activities included the presidency of the Council of Social Agencies of Mason City, and she had been a member of the American Association of University Women. She won a number of golf championships, she held membership in the Hole-in-One Club, having won that in the Women's State Golf Tournament in Des Moines in 1929. She was an enthusiastic supporter of all school sports at Roosevelt. At one time she coached the boys basketball team, which won the city championship.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. J. R. Fling, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. C. J. Everett, Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. E. V. Goodale, Lenox. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

The funeral was at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Major Memorial Chapel. Dr. Walter J. Kalvesmaki, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated.

Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery. A service was also held here Saturday at Bender's, the Rev. James Eddy officiating.
