Obituary - Ardeth Anne (Schmalle) Aastrup
ca. 1928 ~ January 11, 2014

Ardeth Anne Aastrup, age 85, formerly of Thornton, Iowa, passed away on Saturday January 11, 2014 at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday at Thornton United Methodist Church with Pastor Crystal Oberheu presiding. Interment will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton. Memorials may be directed to the Thornton United Methodist Church or the Iowa Commission for the Blind in her memory.

Ardeth Schmalle Aastrup was born on a farm near Thornton to Samuel H. and Nellie (Merchant) Schmalle. She was a graduate of Thornton High School.

Ardeth was united in marriage with Alvin Aastrup on June 26, 1948. they farmed in the area for 42 years. To this union three children were born, Jennifer, Jerry, and Sibyl.

She was a lifelong member of the Thornton First United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included baking, horseback riding, making family photo albums, and furniture refinishing.

She is survived by her two daughters: Jennifer Russell, Cincinnati, Ohio; Sibyl (Jim) Jorgensen, Thornton, Iowa; four grandchildren: Jeff (Juli) Russell and Tim (Molly) Russell, Cincinnati, Ohio; Megan Jorgensen, Aubrey, Texas and Mariah Jorgensen, Thornton; two great-grandchildren: Charlie and Ellie Russell, Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother: Verdell (Bonnie) Schmalle, Fayette, Iowa; one sister-in-law: Beulah Schmalle, Belmond, Iowa; two brothers-in-law: Robert (Verna) Aastrup, Mason City, Iowa and Delmar (Pam) Aastrup, Noel, Missouri.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Aastrup; son, Jerry Aastrup, parents; brother, Wayne Schmalle; sister and brother-in-law, Lois & Roger Caffrey, and son-in-law, Jim Russell.
