Emeline Cannon was born Jan. 31, 1848 in Gerry Chautauqua, NY. Her parents were Amaziah and Cornelia Wait Cannon. In 1855 they moved to Wis. making the trip by boat, living at Pardeeville, Wis. In 1866 they came to Mason City making the trip by team. She drove a team of ponies and a light wagon following a load of household goods. There were no roads and some of the streams were swollen and on one occasion the horses had to swim. They crossed the Mississippi by Ferry at Prairie Du Chien. The farm home was three miles northwest of Mason City, Iowa and was constructed by local stone and native lumber, sawed at the local mill near the present Decker plant. The stage road ran by the house. There were only three houses between Mason City and Clear Lake. The nearest railroad was at Waverly.

In 1868 she was married to Thomas Willis Dent, a Civil War Veteran. They lived near Winnebago, Minnesota. They came to Mason City in 1873 and lived on what is now north Federal Avenue. They moved to the Cannon farm to take care of her invalid mother after her fathers death in 1881.

To them were born four children: Elmer Joseph (now deceased), Sidney A. and Louis W. of Mason City and J. Grant of St. Paul, Minnesota. Surviving besides the three sons are a sister, Mrs. Etta Storer of Mason City, and one Granddaughter, Marion J. Dent of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Died 7 Oct 1944
