MYRTLE “MYRT” OLSON

Myrtle “Myrt” Olson, 90, Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at North Iowa Mercy Health Center’s east campus, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 20, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jonathan Swenson officiating. Burial was in Norway Cemetery, Norway, Iowa, with the Rev. Nathan Tuff officiating. The family suggests memorials to Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Myrtle was born Jan. 21, 1908 in Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Ole S. and Anna Stella Theresa (Hage) Olson. She was the couple’s third oldest among nine children, and the second oldest girl in the family. She graduated from Norway High School and went on to attend St. Olaf College. She finished her bachelor of arts degree in education at the University of Iowa. She did post-graduate work at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Drake University, Colorado University, and Whittier College, Whittier, Calif.

Myrtle taught school at Conroy and Norway, Iowa for six years. She came to Clear Lake in 1939 and taught fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary School until 1972. She loved her fourth graders and teaching them most of all. She was awarded the Valley Forge Award for excellence in teaching 1964.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, where she taught Bible School for several years, was a member of the Altar Guild, a Circle member Quilter, and served on the Education Council twice.

Her hobbies included traveling, knitting, reading, playing bridge, lunching out, and visiting friends and shut-ins.

She is survived by five sisters, Sylvia Roche, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Opal Krumm, Oklahoma City, Okla., Ruth Olson and her husband, Bob, Oklahoma City, Thelma Borg and her husband, Arnold, of Cedar Rapids, and Ann Amosson and her husband, Obie, of Ottumwa, Iowa; a brother, Bernard Olson, of Whittier, Calif.; 11 nieces and nephews; and special friend Grace Anderson, Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Percy and Arlie Olson.

Organist Karen Harthan accompanied soloist Rev. Jonathan Swenson. Pallbearers were Scott Kennedy, Mike Tarr, Bill Wistey, John Larsen, Dale Snyder, and Matt Miller.
