May 20, 1905 ~ September 29, 1997MASON CITY — Ethel (Ames) Ransom, 92, of Shalom Towers, Mason City, died Monday afternoon (Sept. 29, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral home, 123 Second St. S.E.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Ethel Ransom Memorial Fund.
Ethel was born May 20, 1905, the daughter of George and Laura (Millard) Long in Lake Township. In 1923, she graduated from Clear Lake High School. Following high school she was united in marriage to Lloyd Ames, and to them were born nine beautiful children. Later, she was united in marriage to C. Edmond Ransom. As a life-long resident of the area, she was a cook for Freddie's and Lytle's Restaurants.
Ethel was a very determined woman who enjoyed camping in Rockwell and Rock Falls. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren fishing, watching the Twins play baseball, or the Hawkeye's play basketball on T.V. During the summer and early fall, her time was spent gardening and canning. When not sending out birthday cards, Ethel could be found crocheting, playing cards or Bingo. But what she really loved was her apartment and friends at the Shalom Towers.
Ethel is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Whitehurst Harlam of Clear Lake, and Gladys Siems of Charles City; six sons, Bob and his wife, Marlis Ames, of Rockwell, Francis and his wife, Bev Ames, of Klemme, Dale Ames of Wayzata, Minn., Roger and his wife, Leona Ames, of Mason City, Bill and his wife, Virginia Ames, of Rockwell, Jerry and his wife, Barb Ames, of Ankeny; two step-daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Chuck (Ruth) Norris, and Mr. and Mrs. Lynn (Lois) Hubbard; two step-sons, Keith and his wife, June Ransom, and Don and his wife, Lucille Ransom; two sisters, Evelyn Dyre of Nora Springs, and Arleen Higgins of Mason City; 32 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; one daughter, Marjorie; three sisters; one brother; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and two great-great-granddaughters.
