March 22, 1893 ~ August 15, 1979Harvey B. Major, longtime Mason City resident and retired director of the Major Funeral Home, died Wednesday (August 15, 1979) at a Des Moines hospital. Mr. Major, 86, had lived at the Manor in Mason City.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home. Private committal services will be held in Elmwood Cemetery.
Born in Illinois, Mr. Major came to Mason City in 1912. He began his career as an apprentice with the Randall Furniture and Undertaking Co. here and completed his training at the Hohensuch Carpenter School of Embalming in Des Moines. For 16 years he was a partner in the Randall Funeral Home, and in 1937 purchased the business, which he renamed Major Funeral Home. In 1959, Mr. Major sold the funeral home to Richard D. Erickson, but continued to assist in conducting services. He was associated with the local funeral home a total of 48 years.
World War I veteran, he was a member of Clausen Worden Post 101 of American Legion. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church, IOOF Lodge and Benevolence Lodge 145 A.F. & A.M.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Peterson, Columbia, MO.; a son, Robert L., Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Olive Goltz, Mason City, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
