Obituary - Thomas "Tom" Harrer
October 23, 1919 ~ November 19, 2013

SISTER BAY, Wis. - Thomas “Tom” Harrer, formerly of Mason City, died peacefully Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Marquette General Hospital, Marquette, Mich., surrounded by his loving family, his wife, Ann Lynaugh, daughter Ellen and son Max, his brother John and his niece Libby Ellis.

Tom Harrer was born July 10, 1944, to Donald Grady Harrer and the late Elizabeth (Betty) Hakes Harrer in Mason City while Grady was a prisoner of war in Germany. Tom attended Mason City schools through the eighth grade, then moved with his family to Madison, Wis., where he graduated from West High School.

He served in the U. S. Army from 1966-1968 as a 1st Lieutenant with the 10th Cavalry, 7th Infantry Division in South Korea, then returned to school, graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

He was a commercial multi-engine prop pilot and flight instructor, an SCCA race car driver, ran a race prep service and recently drove a school bus for Gibraltar Schools in Sister Bay, Wis.

A passion for sailing the Great Lakes, he had a Merchant Marine Captain's License.

Tom is survived by his wife Ann Lynaugh, his son Max Milverstedt (Sara Yoder), their children Sam and Charlie in Boulder, Colo., his daughter Ellen, studying art history in Chicago, his father Grady of Mason City, sister Maggie (Peggy) (Rick Henly) and daughter Katie Henly of Oradell, N.J., sister Martha Harrer-Butler and daughter Caitlin Butler of Los Angeles, Calif., brother John and his children Libby Ellis and Corky of Minneapolis, Minn.
