LARRY MILLER 1933 – 1994

DES MOINES – Larry Miller, president of Ruan Transportation Management Systems, passed away Thursday evening, (July 14, 1994), of a heart attack. He was 61 years old.

Mr. Miller was a native of Clear Lake, and continued to maintain a summer residence at Dodges Point.

Larry Miller was a 1950 graduate of Clear Lake High School. He attended Northern Iowa Area Community College, leaving to enroll in the Navy Cadet Program in 1952. He was He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant as a United State Marine Corps jet fighter pilot and achieved membership in the coveted Mach Buster Club. Mr. Miller went on to attend Military Intelligence School in Washington, D.C. and finished his education graduating from the University of Iowa with a Political Science Degree in 1958.

Mr. Miller was born March 26, 1933 in Mason City, the son of Lloyd W. and Oneita (Dieterlen) Miller.

Larry Miller married Jean Lamm in November of 1955 at Spring Hope, N.C.

Mr. Miller held a commercial driver’s license, pilot’s and auto racing licenses. He was a member of the Board of Bankers Trust, Fareway Stores, Ruan Center Corporation, Truck Renting and Leasing Association, American Truck Association Executive Council--Policy and Finance Committee, and was Treasurer of the ATA Foundation, Iowa Motor Truck Association and a member of the Mason City Country Club.

Larry Miller joined Ruan Transportation in 1962 to develop a national truck leasing network. Today, Ruan operates one of four national transportation networks and a major dedicated common carrier.

Larry was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Dieterlen of Clear Lake; and Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Miller of Manly, Iowa. His father was the late Lloyd W. Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, Des Moines, Iowa; daughters, Joy and Kim, both of Arlington, Va.; a son, Rex, of Des Moines; his mother, Oneita; and a special aunt, Carmen Vawter, both of Dodges Point, Clear Lake.
