FRED SHAFFER SUCCUMBS
CLEAR LAKE – Fred Irving Shaffer, 56, died Monday afternoon at a Mason City hospital following an illness. He had made his home with his sister, Mrs. Charles D. Smith, south of Clear Lake, for several years. Previously he lived for seven years with his brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur H. Krebs, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. Mrs. Harry Mason, organist, accompanied Mrs. William R. Bickford, who sang several selections. Flowers were arranged by Mrs. James W. Davis and Mrs. Henry Riekens. Pallbearers were Clarence T. Olson, Harry W. Collins, L. E. Jacobson, Max Hugh, Lloyd Hunt and Harold Kaster. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Fred Shaffer was born April 29, 1902, north of Thornton, the son of John and Ada Shaffer. He attended Thornton schools and later farmed. He worked at the munitions plant at Rosemont, Minn., during World War II and later for General Electric at DeKalb, Ill. In 1947 he suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in DeKalb.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Charles D. (Dolly) Smith, Mrs. Alvin (Alta) Bunting and Mrs. Art (Edna) Butts, all of Clear Lake, and one brother, Bill, Ventura.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, Frank and Walter, and one sister in infancy.
NOTE – Fred Shaffer died June 3, 1958.
