Michael Francis Casey
Michael Francis Casey, 64, of Clear Lake passed away July 12, 2010, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Center, Mason City, Iowa.
A funeral Mass will be held for Michael on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City with Msgr. Joseph Slepicka officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. on Friday. Mike will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at a later date.
Mike was born March 30, 1946 in Mason City to Robert E. Casey, Sr., and Helen Jean (Lattimer) Casey. Mike graduated from Newman Catholic High School in 1964. He received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University in 1969, and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from the University of Michigan in 1978.
Mike proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1990. His service included tours of duty in Vietnam, Diego Garcia, the Philippines, Crete, Italy, Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois, and Point Mugu Naval Air Station, California. He declined a commission to the Pentagon as he truly loved having the command and the daily interaction with his staff at the bases where he served. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and lived for many years in Oxnard, Calif. before moving to this area to reside in Clear Lake. He gave his life for his country, finally succumbing to the cancer caused by exposure to agent orange during his two tours of duty in Vietnam. Mike loved his life in the Navy and very much enjoyed opportunities to join in activities with fellow veterans.
Mike was an avid collector of die cast construction models, military models and model railroading items. He also enjoyed reading science fiction and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert E. Casey, Sr.
Mike is survived by his mother Helen Jean Casey of Mason City; four siblings and their spouses: Marc (Cherie) Casey, Dyersville, Iowa; Robert (Cathy) Casey, Jr., Atlanta, Ga.; Jean (Matt Berry) Casey, Clear Lake; and Theresa (Jeff) Rypel, Greendale, Wis. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews: Cori (Bryan) Turner, Kevin Casey, Amy Casey, Sergei Casey, Oksana Casey, Katie Berry, Robert Berry and Kaitlin Rypel, and great-niece, Kendall Turner.
