CARL E. LARSEN

CLEAR LAKE — Carl E. Larsen, 201 S. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Tilp officiating. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, in the Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Clear Lake VFW Post 4868.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a Scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Memorials may be directed to the Carl E. Larsen Memorial Fund.

Carl was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Clear Lake, the son of Danish immigrants, Chris and Martha (Saling) Larsen. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, and fought in World War II, serving on the USS Denabola ship touring the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and South Pacific.

Carl married Ann Jindrich June 7, 1947, in Swaledale, Iowa. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in January 1979. He was proud to say he lived his entire live in Clear Lake.

Carl loved hunting, fishing and gardening; his greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling to the renaissance festivals with his sons.

Carl was a member of the Clear Lake VFW, the DAV, National Letter Carriers Association, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Larsen, of Clear Lake; eight children, Barbara Bentele and her husband, John, Mason City, John Larsen and his wife, Mary, Clear Lake, Katie Virden and her husband, Tim, Cedar Rapids, Julie Tiedemann and her husband, Merle, Mason City, Chris Larsen and his wife, Kristi, Mason City, Matt Larsen and his wife, Sue, Clear Lake, Mary Huey of Medford, Ore., and Jeannette Jones, of Anchorage, Alaska; 24 grandchildren,11 great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Teeter and her husband, Cecil, Lawrence, Kan.; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Jim and Paul Larsen; sister, Marie; and son-in-law, Mike Jones.
