Orvin K. "Whitey" Whitehurst 76, of 1805 N. 8th St., Clear Lake, died Monday,
Dec. 15, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 20, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Family suggest memorials to Hospice Of North Iowa or Dialysis Center
of Mercy Medical Center.

Orvin was born July 31, 1927, the son of Noah E. and Zora Nell (Wyant)
Whitehurst at rural Britt, Iowa. Orvin attended school in Britt and Garner,
Iowa. Orvin married Gladys Lowe on Oct. 13, 1945, and then entered the US Army
Oct. 18, 1945. He served in the Military Police during WWII and following the
service moved back to Ventura, Iowa. He drove truck and helped farm for Lloyd
Law. He later drove transport for Skelly Oil Co,. later known as Skelgas, for 27
years. In 1961 he moved to a farm northwest of Clear Lake. Orvin married Janice
Gelner on May 5, 1975 at Pittsfield, Ill., and in 1980 moved to California and
worked at Costa Mesa Memorial Hospital. In 1988 they retired and moved back to
Clear Lake. He enjoyed his horses, dogs, cats, and woodworking, as well as
rounding up cattle in North Dakota. Orvin was well known for his jokes, clever
stories, his smirk and spending time with his family and friends.

Orvin is survived by his wife, Janice Whitehurst of Clear Lake; eleven children,
Gary (Genelle) Whitehurst, Clear Lake, Jerry (Jane) Whitehurst, Ollie, Iowa;
Sandra (Harold) Rye, Lake City, Minn., Denny (Cheryl) Whitehurst, Doug (Norma)
Whitehurst, David (Sandra) Whitehurst, Randy (Wendy) Whitehurst, all of Clear
Lake, Kevin (Linda) Whitehurst, Oshkosh, Wis., Laurie (Bert) Mills, Plymouth,
Iowa, Teresa (Rob) Sorensen, Ringsted, Iowa, Mike (Lynette) Whitehurst, Manly,
Iowa; six step-children, Jan (Gene) Weis, Davenport, Iowa, Jeannie (Doug)
Thompson, McKinney, Texas, Jerri (Steven) Spohn, Rochester, Minn., Ken (Jean)
Hanson, Kansas City, Mo., Ron (Celeste) Hanson, Eagan, Minn., Ronda Ryan,
Burnsville, Minn.; three sisters, Evelyn "Jane" Stokesbary, Clear Lake; Gladys
Schmid, Britt, Iowa, Irene Pletcher, Forest City, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren, and 16 step-grandchildren.

Orvin was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ivan, John, Glen
"Jake", and Mervin; three sisters, Blanche, Loretta "Ellen" and Vestus "Toot"; a
son, Steven, and granddaughter, Ann Marie Whitehurst.
