Lake, with the Rev. Dan Jordan officiating. Inurnment was at the Clear Lake
Cemetery. Memorials and cards may be directed to the family and sent to Gayle

Margaret was born Aug. 2, 1920, the daughter of Edwin J. and Bessie (Turner)
Palmer in Algona, Iowa. She graduated from Algona High School in 1939. She met
Gail O. Hakes during Christmas of that year and they were married on July 4,
1940.

From that union eight children were born. In 1946 the family moved to a farm
south of Clear Lake. Margaret was a helpful partner with Gail in farming for
several years. The couple left farming in the spring of 1959 and purchased
Allen’s Tire Shop south of Clear Lake. Margaret assisted Gail with that
business in any way she could. She was a good mother to her children. While on
the farm Margaret made Tuesdays very special by baking homemade bread and
cinnamon rolls for after school treats. She loved the old time dancing music
and often moved the furniture to have room to teach her children the two-step,
polka and waltz.

She was a fun-loving grandmother to her grandchildren, known by them as “Gram
B.” The family moved to Clear Lake in the fall of 1963, just a few days prior
to Gail’s passing. In 1972, Margaret was married to Walter (Pat) Bergman.

Margaret worked for several years as a prep cook, baker and pie maker at the
Truck Stop, The Pantry , and Martha’s, all in Clear Lake, and the Muskie Lounge
in Ventura. Margaret was a past president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 4868.
She was an avid reader, and also enjoyed music, television, and her family and
grandchildren. Margaret also participated in the Christian Women’s Club in
Clear Lake.

After retirement she moved into The Meadows and then to Apple Valley Assisted
Living. She has resided at Oakwood Care Center since January of 2009 due to
declining health.

Left to cherish Margaret’s memory are seven children: sons, Vance (Judith)
