Donald D. “Don” Hewitt, 80, of Waterford, Wis., passed away at Memorial Hospital
of Burlington on Jan. 31, 2013. Don was born in Mason City, Iowa, on April 6,
1932 the son of the late Charles E. and Olga J. (Nelson) Hewitt. He was a
graduate of the Indian Hills Community College Business School of Ottumwa,
Iowa. On Oct. 27, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia A.
Jodan. The couple began their lives together in Clear Lake, Iowa. Don worked in
the offices of the Great Lakes Pipeline Company, moving to various locations in
the Midwest. After business school, he moved his family to Cherokee, Iowa, to be
the General Manager of a Rural Electric Cooperative, and further served on the
board of the Cherokee County Museum. Don was hired away and moved to Wisconsin
to become the General Manager of Southeast Telephone Company in 1979, from which
he retired in 1996. During his tenure at Southeast Telephone, he was a fierce
advocate of the company and its customers. Don was an active member of the
Waterford community for the past 33 years.Don enjoyed singing, pheasant hunting, and keeping up with current affairs. He
was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Toastmasters International. Don proudly
supported his Waterford community by serving on the Village Board. He especially
enjoyed his time on the Waterford Library Board, and took particular pride in
its success. Don was also an avid supporter of the Wisconsin Humane Society.Don is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Pat; his five children, Perry
(Dolores) Hewitt of Bixby, Okla., Scott (Diane) Hewitt of Shiloh, Ill., Denise
(Ron) Pierce of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Tim Hewitt of Rockton, Ill, and Dan (Nicole)
Hewitt of Wind Lake. Wis. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren with another on the way. Don is survived by two brothers,
Ray V. Hewitt, Clear Lake, and Robert (Bonnie) Hewitt, Minneapolis, Minn., and
other relatives and friends.Don was predeceased by his parents and brother, Al.
A memorial gathering for family and friends was held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013
in the Mealy Funeral Home, Waterford. Interment will take place at a later date
in Mason City Memorial Park, Mason City. In lieu of flowers, Don's family would
appreciate memorials to the Wisconsin Humane Society of Racine or the Waterford
Public Library.
