Doris M. Carpenter, 98, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the
Oakwood Care Center. A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 6, at Clear
Lake Christian Church, with Pastor Scott Wilson officiating. Donations may be
sent in her name to Clear Lake Christian Church

Doris was born June 5, 1911, in Kenesaw, Neb., the daughter of Marie Newill.
She grew up in Omaha, Neb., Creston, Iowa, and Sioux Falls, S.D., finally moving
to Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 12 where she lived for more than 60 years.

Although she wanted to go to art school, her graduation in 1929 meant tuition
wasn’t possible. She worked after high school, earning enough money to go to
business school. Then she worked for Bankers Life Insurance Company. In 1937,
she married George “Carp” Carpenter, who was a department supervisor at Bankers.
Later she worked at Thrift Loan Company.

When her daughter was growing up, Doris was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school
teacher and active member of the P.T.A. After her husband retired in the early
1970’s, they moved to Clear Lake where she volunteered for many years at Oakwood
Care Center and was active in Clear Lake Christian Church, Progress Club and
Mothers’ Club. She also enjoyed travel, reading and working in her yard.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Candy (John) Bowen, Stow, Ohio; grandson,
Skip Perkins and his wife, Kiyomi Noguchi, San Francisco, Calif.; three
step-grandchildren, Jennifer Bowen, Lakewood, Ohio; Corey M. (Corey J.) Pate,
Warren, Ohio; and Jeff Bowen, Lexington, Ky.; and great-grandchildren, Ivy
Perkins and Robbie Pate.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her husband.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
