Mrs. William C. SPENCER, 621 1st S. E., received a package of articles sent from Germany by her husband, Pfc. SPENCER, stationed there. Among the things were a lady's raincoat, German helmet, German sweat shirts, swastika armbands, a man's wrist watch, German rifle and a knife sharpener. SPENCER has been overseas for 9 months, all of that time in Germany. He wrote that he expected to be home by the middle of October.

Injuries Fatal to Pfc. W. C. Spencer
Pfc. William C. SPENCER, 36, whose wife and 4 children live at 621 1st S. E., died [October 24] in France as a result of injuries received in a train accident while en route to Marseilles where he was to embark for the states, according to a message received here Monday night from the war department.
Pfc. SPENCER was an insurance man for the State Farm Insurance company of Bloomington, Ill., at the time of his induction into the army in March, 1944. He had been overseas since March, 1945, and had served in Germany, Belgium and France. He had earned 3 battle stars in his ETO [European Theater Operations] ribbon and had been awarded the combat infantryman's badge.
SPENCER was a member of the Elks. The year preceding 1944 he was high agent among all Iowa agents for the insurance company named. Before going to work for the company, he had been employed at Deckers. A letter written by him on October 23, the day before the accident, had stated that he was on his way home.
The 4 children surviving besides his wife are 3 daughters and a son as follows: Janice, 17, Marlyn, 13, Diane, 5, and Suzanne, 14 months. A brother, Claude, lives in Mason City and another brother, Harvey, in Des Moines. A sister, Mrs. George BOWERS, lives in Buffalo Center. His parents preceded him in death.
